Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has received more than £500,000 from foreign entities, organizations, and donors since taking office as a Member of Parliament. This substantial income, amounting to nearly £2 million, has been amassed since July 2024, following his successful bid after seven previous attempts. A significant portion, £675,000, originated from international sources, as reported by Desmog. This income is in addition to Farage’s annual MP salary of £94,000. Out of 28 individuals contributing to Farage, 71% are located overseas.
The revelation comes amid heightened scrutiny of foreign influences on British politics, particularly concerning efforts by the Labour government to regulate foreign donations to UK political parties. Farage’s primary foreign revenue stream came from Cameo, a U.S.-based platform where celebrities create paid video messages. Additionally, he earned £222,000 from the site after assuming his parliamentary role, ceasing the service recently.
Farage has also profited from various international speaking engagements, including a £40,000 appearance at Nomad Capitalist Live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in September 2024. Nomad Capitalist, headquartered in Hong Kong, specializes in advising wealthy individuals on tax optimization. Furthermore, he has received gifts from foreign governments, such as a £10,000 package from the Abu Dhabi government to attend the local Formula One Grand Prix.
Labour’s Anna Turley criticized Farage for his frequent international travel while neglecting his parliamentary duties, pointing out his acceptance of financial benefits from foreign sources. Despite positioning himself as a champion for working-class constituents, Farage, the highest-paid MP in the UK, has also benefited from £85,000 worth of private jet trips funded by prominent Reform donor Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency investor residing in Thailand.
Tom Brake, Director of Unlock Democracy, expressed concern over MPs prioritizing personal income over constituent representation, particularly when such income is sourced from foreign entities. He emphasized the risks associated with foreign financial ties that may compromise the independence and integrity of UK legislators.
The Rycroft Review, authored by former Foreign Office permanent secretary Philip Rycroft, highlighted the persistent threat of foreign entities interfering in British democracy. Rycroft underscored the need for urgent government action to counter these threats and safeguard the integrity of the UK’s democratic processes.
