Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines’ locations are heavily guarded secrets within the nation. Recently, The Mirror had a rare opportunity to join the Prime Minister for a visit to a returning submarine after a 206-day mission, referred to as “story X” for security measures, with limited prior knowledge shared among colleagues.
Arriving at the surfaced vessel off the Scottish coast, surrounded by military personnel, the experience involved navigating onto the submarine through a hatch, descending a steep ladder into its interior. The atmosphere inside was a blend of oil, salt, and a fleeting fish scent, revealing a complex network of rooms and equipment illuminated by artificial lighting.
Exploration included key areas like the communications hub and control room, highlighting the vessel’s critical role in Britain’s defense strategy. Noteworthy features included advanced sonar systems detecting marine life and a secure compartment housing instructions from the Prime Minister in the event of a catastrophic scenario.
The crew, comprising 160 individuals, follows rigorous schedules, with distinct meal times serving as markers of time passing. Despite the prolonged periods at sea, the crew’s morale is upheld through physical activities, communal events like football scores updates, and even on-board services like a designated hairdresser.
The submariners endure close quarters and limited external contact, fostering strong bonds within this isolated community. Communication with loved ones is restricted, with crew members enduring significant personal sacrifices, such as missing important family events or news while on duty.
