A young man tragically lost his life while trying to intervene in a violent altercation described as “drunken yobbish behavior.” Liam Derrett was assaulted by Kai Donachie and Joshua Harris in Ilkeston Market Place when he attempted to break up a fight.
The fatal incident occurred when Liam was struck by the attackers, causing him to fall and suffer a severe head injury. Despite his efforts to maintain peace, the 19-year-old succumbed to his injuries two days later, having sustained a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage.
During the sentencing, Judge Shaun Smith KC condemned the senseless violence, emphasizing the need for civility in public spaces. He acknowledged Liam’s innocence and described him as a peacemaker who always sought to defuse conflicts.
Witnesses confirmed that Liam was not involved in the initial altercation and was actively trying to de-escalate the situation. CCTV footage captured the moment when he was struck by the assailants, leading to his tragic fall and subsequent injuries.
Prosecutor Andrew Vout KC highlighted the unprovoked nature of the attack, noting that Liam posed no threat and was merely advocating for peace. Despite the severity of the assault, the perpetrators showed no remorse and failed to assist the victim in his time of need.
Both Donachie and Harris were apprehended shortly after the incident, with Donachie admitting to a lesser charge of affray, while Harris pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The court heard emotional statements from Liam’s family, underscoring his kind and caring nature.
Donachie’s defense attorney emphasized his client’s lack of intent to cause harm, while Harris’s lawyer highlighted his positive actions in other situations. Donachie received a four-month jail term, which was offset by time served, while Harris was sentenced to six years in prison.
