Lieutenant Colonel Mark Luson, a British commanding officer overseeing troops supporting Europe’s defense against Russian aggression, expressed confidence in NATO’s strength, stating that the alliance feels “stronger than ever.” Currently stationed at Estonia’s Tapa military base with the Royal Tank Regiment, the 1,250-strong troops showcased the alliance’s robustness during exercises near the Russian border, just 70 miles away.
As part of Operation Cabrit, British forces are deployed in Estonia and Poland under NATO’s Forward Land Forces initiative. Despite recent tensions within NATO due to US President Donald Trump’s Greenland annexation threats, Lt Col Luson emphasized that concerns about the alliance’s future have not affected the troops’ morale during the rigorous training sessions in extreme cold weather conditions.
The Royal Tank Regiment’s presence in Estonia since September has culminated in Exercise Winter Camp, aimed at familiarizing NATO troops with operating in severe cold weather. With temperatures dropping as low as minus 30C at night, troops are adapting to the challenging conditions, ensuring readiness and cohesion within the alliance.
Kingsman Jayden Warburton, a UK soldier from Greater Manchester, marked his 20th birthday at the Tapa range, highlighting the regiment’s commitment to training in harsh environments. Despite the freezing temperatures, Warburton found the experience valuable and credited the training for making it bearable. As part of ongoing efforts, British troops have been assisting Ukrainian forces in combat training since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, led by President Vladimir Putin.
