A distressed mother from Britain has shared her anguish regarding her daughter’s detention in Dubai amidst ongoing missile strikes in the area. Antonia Bettridge, aged 25, relocated to the UAE in November 2023, transitioning from a sports coach to real estate work while pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer.
However, Antonia, a fitness enthusiast from St Helens, is now in custody facing potential life imprisonment due to alleged drug-related charges. The exact timing of her arrest remains uncertain but is believed to have occurred at the beginning of the previous month. Legal advisors have confirmed that she is detained under the UAE’s narcotics legislation for suspected involvement in “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.”
If found guilty, the 25-year-old could be sentenced to life imprisonment and a possible AED 200,000 fine. Detained in Dubai (DID) stated that Dubai authorities do not require proof of intent to distribute or promote drugs. Antonia’s unnamed mother expressed confusion and fear over the situation, emphasizing her daughter’s dedication to fitness and healthy living, stating that they are devastated and seeking clarity.
Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, assisting the family, highlighted concerns amid the regional conflict in the Middle East. She emphasized the importance of allowing defendants to prepare their cases outside detention, especially during times of heightened regional instability.
Antonia had previously faced legal issues in the UK, being convicted of possessing criminal property in September 2023. Following a police discovery of £8,000 in her car, she received a 12-month community order, rehabilitation activities, unpaid work, and court costs.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed they are supporting the detained British woman in the UAE. British expats in Dubai are advised to remain cautious due to escalating tensions in the region, impacting airspace and flight operations.
