A legal dispute has arisen over the fate of a wild wolf in Germany, which may be euthanized due to its overly friendly behavior towards hikers and willingness to pose for photos. Known only as GW2672m, the wolf has become a popular subject in selfies taken by visitors to the renowned Black Forest. The Environment Minister, Thekla Walker, issued a special permit to shoot the wolf, citing its unusual actions of approaching people and dogs and showing no fear of being photographed.
The state farmers’ association reported over 180 sightings of the wolf, with some encounters occurring as close as six meters. Conservation group Naturschutzinitiative has taken legal action by filing an emergency case with the Stuttgart Administrative Court to challenge the kill order. The court has temporarily suspended the planned shooting pending a legal review.
One notable encounter involved Michaela Jung, who calmly met the wolf while out walking with her husband and dog. Despite the peaceful interaction, conservationists have raised concerns about the wolf’s behavior. Jung, along with others, has launched petitions to save the wolf from being euthanized.
While some individuals found the wolf’s presence intriguing and harmless, others, like Matthias Wiegert, felt uneasy after close encounters. The environment ministry defended its decision, stating that capturing the wolf alive had proven unsuccessful. Despite the debate surrounding the wolf’s actions, its fate remains uncertain as legal proceedings continue.
