The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has been cautioned to ensure that its stockpile of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is suitable for women to address safety concerns.
According to the General, Municipal, Boilermakers (GMB) union, the current practice of providing women with resized men’s PPE creates a safety risk as it often does not fit properly, rendering it ineffective and potentially hazardous.
To address this issue, the GMB union has secured commitments from companies to adhere to an inclusive PPE Charter, aiming to safeguard up to 250,000 women. However, there are growing calls to extend this initiative to enhance protection for frontline workers.
A survey conducted by the GMB revealed that around 70% of women face challenges with ill-fitting protective gear, leading to feelings of insecurity, embarrassment, and fear while on duty. In response, Labour MP Kirsteen Sullivan and GMB’s Mel Bartlett have urged the UKHSA to take immediate action.
They emphasized the importance of providing properly fitting PPE to prevent foreseeable risks and ensure the safety of the workforce and the public. It was highlighted that ill-fitting equipment compromises infection control efforts, putting marginalized groups at a higher risk.
The UKHSA has been urged to reassess its PPE standards, introduce fit-to-form requirements, and examine existing assumptions about PPE fit to avoid preventable risks. The necessity for this action was underscored by the revelation that inadequate PPE assessments in the past resulted in significant financial losses for the government.
As the UK gears up to establish a robust health protection strategy, including a new national contact tracing system and PPE stockpiling, stakeholders stress the importance of learning from past mistakes to enhance preparedness for future health crises.
In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Ms. Sullivan stressed the need for accountability in PPE procurement, highlighting the importance of ensuring that the allocated public funds are spent efficiently to benefit frontline workers. Ms. Bartlett echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of well-fitted PPE in safeguarding healthcare workers against infections.
A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of NHS and social care staff. They affirmed that employers are legally required to provide properly fitting PPE to their employees and assured that PPE stockpiles contain a variety of sizes to accommodate different needs.
The government’s ongoing investment of £1 billion in health protection initiatives, including vaccine access and pandemic surveillance enhancements, underscores its dedication to enhancing preparedness for future health emergencies.
