A man known as “Hamster” to the staff at a Greggs bakery in Greenford, west London, has spoken out after being caught stealing nearly £2,000 worth of food from the store. Adam Gosling, aged 39, committed the thefts 38 times between December 30, 2025, and February 10.
Despite the significant value of the stolen items, ranging from £12.30 to £100 per visit, Gosling avoided prison following his appearance at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court. His six-week stealing spree totaled £1,817.50, as revealed during the court hearing.
Greggs employees began documenting the thefts when they noticed a considerable amount of stock disappearing. The Metropolitan Police’s Greenford Broadway safer neighbourhood team commended their vigilance in tracking the thefts.
Police officer James Tupman identified Gosling as the main culprit, nicknamed “Hamster,” and arrested him with the help of CCTV footage on February 10. Homeless at the time, Gosling pleaded guilty to 38 counts of theft from the shop.
Chairwoman Judy Gregg sentenced Gosling to a four-month suspended jail term. The court praised the cooperation between the police and Greggs staff, emphasizing their efforts to combat theft and support the investigation.
Superintendent Sean Lynch expressed the commitment of the authorities to address issues affecting businesses and communities, such as shoplifting. He highlighted a decrease in theft offenses in the area and emphasized ongoing efforts to reduce crime and bring offenders to justice.
Following the court proceedings, Gosling expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to Greggs and vowing never to repeat his thefts. He promised to rectify his behavior and prevent others from engaging in similar activities, signaling a fresh start in his life.
