“Putin’s Space Nuke Threat Raises Global Alarm”

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering deploying nuclear weapons in space to create global chaos, according to a warning issued by General Stephen Whiting, the head of US Space Command. The United States is deeply concerned about Russia’s intentions to pose a space threat by potentially launching a nuclear anti-satellite weapon into orbit. This weapon could have devastating effects on Earth by destroying numerous satellites, disrupting air travel, GPS services, and communications systems. The potential impact of Putin’s plan has been likened to a “space Pearl Harbor.”

The detonation of a nuclear bomb at a low orbit altitude could jeopardize up to 80% of the satellites in space, causing significant disruption not only to military operations but also to everyday life. General Whiting emphasized that Russia’s focus on space activities has predominantly revolved around military objectives, such as interfering with western satellites through actions like GPS jamming, which could assist in Putin’s controversial actions, including the invasion of Ukraine.

The US space chief highlighted the recklessness of Russia’s military actions in space, which could endanger aircraft safety. He expressed concerns about the impact of GPS jamming on civilian aviation in Eastern and Southern Europe, emphasizing the need to prevent such risks to civilian airliners. Additionally, he underscored the critical role of satellite-based technology, like Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service, in supporting countries like Ukraine in their defense efforts against hostile forces.

While acknowledging the potential threat posed by Russia, General Whiting also drew attention to China as a significant space adversary for the United States. He warned of China’s rapid advancements in developing anti-satellite rockets, GPS jamming devices, and directed energy weapons. The US space chief urged the UK to increase its investments in space defense to effectively address the escalating challenges posed by Russia and China in this evolving battleground.
