A tragic incident has unfolded where seven members of a single family were discovered deceased after being reportedly abducted and subjected to executions.

Authorities have apprehended three individuals on charges that include rape and homicide in connection to the abduction and killings of the seven family members in Newark, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The tragic events transpired in Melmoth.

The suspects, aged 21, 26, and 28, are scheduled to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday following the incident that occurred on April 21 at a residence in Newtown, Newark. The discovery was made by a domestic worker who arrived the next day to find the property burglarized, and all seven family members along with a vehicle missing.

The Newark police were alerted promptly, prompting an extensive search involving various law enforcement units and private security partners. The suspects guided the authorities to Melmoth on Wednesday where the bodies of the seven victims, aged between 20 and 83, were located.

According to reports, the victims were allegedly bound with rope after the break-in, and a 20-year-old woman was subjected to a sexual assault. Subsequently, the family was transported in their own vehicle to Melmoth, approximately 200km away from their home.

A statement from the South African Police stated: “Upon arriving at the scene on Wednesday morning, April 22, 2026, a domestic worker employed by the victims found the house broken into, with seven individuals and a vehicle missing. The Newark police were alerted, leading to the activation of various police units.”

“Prompt police investigations led to the apprehension of two suspects in the Hlomendlini area on Wednesday afternoon. One of the suspects was in possession of a mobile phone belonging to one of the kidnapped victims.”

“Further information directed the police to the Dendetu area in Sundumbili, where the third suspect was arrested. Upon arrest, he was found with a firearm and a total of 11 cellphones were seized from the suspects.”

The authorities also revealed that one of the suspects had been employed by the family that suffered the tragic fate. Notably, bank transfers were conducted from the victims’ accounts on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
