“Families’ Advocacy Leads to Tougher Laws on Criminal Accountability”

Date:

The Victims’ Commissioner has commended bereaved families for their relentless advocacy efforts following the recent passing of a new law aimed at holding criminals accountable. Claire Waxman specifically praised the families of Sabina Nessa, Zara Aleena, Jan Mustafa, and Olivia Pratt-Korbel, highlighting that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes failed to attend their sentencing hearings.

Waxman acknowledged the families for turning their profound grief into a focused campaign to ensure justice for their loved ones. The newly enacted Victims and Courts Bill, which received Royal Assent, stipulates that offenders who evade justice may face additional penalties of up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine.

Moreover, the law allows for punitive measures such as solitary confinement, restricted access to facilities, and financial repercussions for disruptive offenders during sentencing proceedings. The legislation marks a significant triumph for grieving families who have tirelessly advocated for justice, especially in cases where criminals have avoided facing the consequences of their actions.

One of the vocal advocates for legal reform is Cheryl Korbel, the mother of Olivia Pratt-Korbel, who tragically lost her life in 2022 due to a criminal incident. Cheryl Korbel has been a driving force behind the call for ‘Olivia’s Law’ to compel offenders to face the legal repercussions of their actions.

The amended law is a culmination of persistent efforts by bereaved families and victims who refused to be sidelined, championing for change with determination and courage. It is a recognition of the importance of ensuring accountability and justice in the legal process, particularly for those directly impacted by criminal acts.
