“Trump Threatens Zambia with Aid Cut Over Mineral Access”

Date:

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a warning to Zambia, stating that the country must agree to provide preferential access to its mineral resources to American businesses. Failure to comply could lead to a significant reduction in healthcare funding, impacting millions of individuals.

Zambia has until April 30th to make a decision regarding granting US businesses preferential access to its minerals. Refusal to do so may result in the withdrawal of support for 1.3 million people who depend on US funding for HIV treatment. HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system, making it challenging to combat infections. US aid plays a crucial role in providing antiretroviral treatment, which inhibits the virus’s replication and aids immune system recovery.

The country’s mineral reserves consist of copper, cobalt, and lithium. Historically, African nations have heavily relied on US financial assistance to sustain their healthcare systems. In 2024, African countries received $5.4 billion in US aid, primarily allocated to humanitarian, health, and disaster relief efforts.

In January 2025, the Trump administration slashed funding and dissolved the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Consequently, a reduction in aid has led to a notable impact, with over half a million child deaths and hundreds of thousands of adult fatalities from preventable diseases like HIV and tuberculosis.

This decision aligns with President Trump’s America First policy, emphasizing that foreign aid should directly benefit US national interests and discouraging dependency on aid. Several African countries have already experienced the repercussions of reduced US aid.

South Africa, for instance, has faced a cessation of health aid due to accusations by the US of genocide against Israel at the International Criminal Court and policies deemed anti-white. The loss of funding has disrupted health services, dismantled HIV prevention programs, and hindered collaborative research efforts between South Africa and the US.
