Elderly Woman Passes Away Alone in Overcrowded A&E

Date:

A young woman, Nadia Wainwright, expressed her shock after witnessing an elderly woman pass away “alone” in the corridors of an emergency department without any support. Nadia, from Henllan in North Wales, recounted how she hurried to the A&E department at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital when her partner fell ill, only to witness the distressing incident.

According to Nadia, along with others, she observed the elderly lady’s final moments as she was left unattended in front of other patients. She described the hospital’s A&E department as severely overcrowded, with patients occupying chairs and beds along the corridors.

Nadia recounted noticing the frail elderly woman left alone in the corridor, opposite her family, without any movement. She mentioned the lack of attention from the staff towards the distressed lady, highlighting the inadequate care provided in such a critical situation.

Following the elderly lady’s passing, as reported by NorthWalesLive, a paramedic eventually acknowledged the situation and called for assistance. The delayed response from the staff and the handling of the incident left Nadia and her family deeply upset, emphasizing the need for better care and sensitivity in such circumstances.

Nadia also shared another distressing incident involving her mother assisting an elderly lady in the crowded A&E department, underlining the urgent need for improved healthcare services and patient care.

Local councillors expressed their concerns over the situation, criticizing the management’s denial of the critical issues present in the A&E department. They emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further tragedies and ensure dignified care for patients.

In response, Angela Wood, the executive director of nursing and midwifery at the health board, acknowledged the distressing experience shared on social media and reiterated the commitment to providing compassionate and dignified care to all patients. She acknowledged the challenges faced by the healthcare system and outlined ongoing efforts to improve patient care and reduce wait times in emergency departments.

The Welsh Government also weighed in on the matter, expressing concerns over patient care in non-clinical environments and emphasizing the need for system-wide reforms to ensure efficient patient movement and enhanced healthcare services.

Efforts are underway to address the challenges faced by emergency departments, including improving staffing levels and community services to enhance patient care and reduce avoidable harm.
