Shocking video footage captured the violent assault on an Asda security guard by a shoplifter, leading to the guard’s collapse and subsequent death. The incident took place in Scotland on June 30, 2024, when Natasha Smith attacked Alun Harris-Richards, a former Royal Marine, as he tried to prevent her from stealing alcohol from the store.
During the confrontation, the security guard suddenly collapsed and suffered a fatal heart attack after being pushed and yelled at by Smith. She was sentenced to five years and four months in jail for the assault. In court, distressing footage revealed Smith verbally abusing the victim and physically resisting his attempts to stop her.
Despite efforts from Asda staff, customers, and paramedics to save him, Mr. Harris-Richards tragically passed away on the shop floor. It was discovered that he had an undiagnosed heart condition that contributed to his sudden death during the altercation. Smith, with a history of criminal activities, expressed remorse for her actions, stating that she did not intend to harm the guard.
Authorities condemned the unprovoked attack, emphasizing that aggressive behavior like this can have severe consequences. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) highlighted the seriousness of the crime and extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kelly described the incident as shocking and emphasized the need to address aggressive behavior to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
