A 25-year-old British national is currently detained in Dubai and could potentially face life imprisonment. Antonia Bettridge, originally from St Helens, Merseyside, made the move to Dubai in November 2023, where she initially worked as a sports coach before transitioning into the property sector and pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer, as per legal representatives from Detained in Dubai (DID).
The exact timing of her arrest remains uncertain, but it is believed to have taken place at the beginning of the previous month. Legal advisors have confirmed that she is being held under the United Arab Emirates’ narcotics legislation on suspicion of “possession of narcotics with intent to promote,” a charge that could result in a substantial AED 200,000 fine and a life sentence if convicted. Authorities in Dubai reportedly do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Antonia’s mother, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing her daughter’s focus on fitness and healthy living. She highlighted that Antonia had moved to Dubai with the intention of creating a positive future for herself and appealed for clarity regarding the circumstances of her detention.
Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, who has been supporting the family, noted that the current regional tensions in the Middle East have heightened anxieties for families with loved ones detained in the UAE. Stirling emphasized the importance of allowing defendants to prepare their cases outside of detention, especially during times of regional instability.
Antonia had a prior legal encounter at Liverpool Crown Court in September 2023, where she was found guilty of possessing criminal proceeds after police discovered a significant sum of money in her possession during a routine stop. Following this incident, she was required to perform unpaid work, engage in rehabilitation activities, and cover court costs.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed its involvement in supporting the detained British woman in the UAE. Meanwhile, British expatriates in Dubai are urged to remain cautious due to escalating tensions in the region, primarily stemming from conflicts between Iran and the US and its allies, leading to airspace closures and flight disruptions.
Although efforts are underway to repatriate stranded individuals, flight cancellations persist, necessitating caution and awareness of security risks around military facilities. The FCDO advises against non-essential travel to the UAE amid the heightened regional unrest. Recent events, including a drone strike on the US consulate building in Dubai, have prompted authorities to prioritize public safety and provide timely updates through official channels.
