Argos Faces Backlash Over Toddler “Influencer Kit”

Date:

Argos is facing criticism for promoting an “essential” influencer kit for toddlers, sparking concerns that it may prioritize being watched over fostering curiosity in young children. Daisy Greenwell, co-founder of Smartphone Free Childhood, expressed disappointment in the product offered by the British retailer. Marketed as a “beautifully crafted wooden live streaming set,” the item is part of Argos’s in-house brand Chad Valley and is priced at £15. It aims to encourage “career role-play” for children as young as two, allowing them to engage in video filming and selfie poses.

The product description online highlights the set’s features, which include a tripod stand, aperture lens, camera, smartphone model, tablet, and microphone—all neatly stored in a carrying pouch. Greenwell questioned the necessity of such a kit for toddlers, emphasizing the importance of allowing children to explore their identities rather than promoting influencer culture from a young age.

Parents have also expressed discontent with the product, agreeing that toys should not steer toddlers towards a career centered on selfies. Lucy Simpson, a mother from Dorset, criticized the use of a ring light in the kit, indicating its potential negative impact on children’s self-perception. Despite the backlash, there are some positive reviews, with one parent praising the product as well-designed and suitable for their child’s enjoyment.

In response to the criticism, an Argos spokesperson defended the product, stating that it is part of a broader range aimed at fostering imaginative and creative play among children. They emphasized that the influencer kit is just one of many items offered by Argos to promote fun and creative play experiences for kids.
