“£10 Million Family Business Dispute Escalates in Court”

Date:

A wealthy couple who rose from humble beginnings is embroiled in a bitter legal battle with their son-in-law over a £10 million dispute, characterized by the couple as a “dramatic seizure” of the family’s wealth.

Natalie Berg, who started as a market trader in 1971 and grew the textiles chain Fabric Land over five decades, along with her husband Jeremy, is now facing off in court against their son-in-law Darren Hill. Darren, who joined the family business with his wife Marnie, claims ownership of the business, estimated at £10 million, alleging that he was assured control of the company before he started working there in 2007.

The dispute escalated following Marnie’s tragic passing at the age of 49 in 2022, leading to conflicting accounts between Darren and the Bergs. While Darren insists on binding promises made by the couple regarding the future of Fabric Land, including eventual ownership, Natalie and Jeremy deny ever making such commitments, dismissing the lawsuit as an opportunistic attempt to seize their assets.

Fabric Land, which evolved from a small market stall in Maidenhead to a thriving textiles chain with headquarters near Bournemouth, serves a diverse customer base, including renowned cruise companies like Carnival Cruise Liners and Cunard for their theatrical costume needs.

The court heard that Marnie had dedicated three decades to Fabric Land, starting at the age of 16, while Darren worked as an executive manager from 2007 to 2022. Darren alleges promises of ownership were made during a family holiday in Vietnam over two decades ago, which influenced his decision to join the business, despite the Bergs’ denial of such assurances.

As the legal battle unfolds, with Judge Nigel Gerald presiding, the core issue revolves around whether the Bergs indeed committed to handing over the business to Darren and Marnie, a claim vehemently opposed by the elderly couple and their legal representation. The trial continues to determine the validity of the alleged promises and the ownership of Fabric Land.
