Martin Lewis has shared strategies to navigate the upcoming wave of price hikes affecting British households. Before his hiatus, the Money Saving Expert founder highlighted key points regarding water, mobile, broadband, and council tax bills, all set to increase starting April 1.
Lewis emphasized the significance of taking action now to counter the impending financial challenges. Water bills in England and Wales will surge by an average of 5.4%, equating to around £33 annually. Transitioning to a water meter can help avoid overpaying, with the option to explore potential savings even without meter installation.
Moreover, Lewis advised on accessing available discounts, such as social tariffs and the Watersure scheme, to cap bills for households with specific needs. Council tax rates are expected to rise by approximately 5% in England, 4% in Wales, and 4-10% in Scotland. Eligible individuals, including single residents, students, carers, and those with low incomes, can secure discounts often overlooked by many.
Regarding mobile contracts, Lewis warned of upcoming price hikes averaging £2.50 monthly. To counter this, he outlined a three-step process for users to verify contract status and potentially switch to better deals, emphasizing the benefits of comparison sites over direct provider interactions. He also debunked concerns about network coverage, pointing out the limited infrastructure behind most major providers.
For seamless switching while retaining your number, Lewis recommended obtaining a switching code via text, a tactic that could prompt current providers to offer significant discounts to retain customers. Lastly, on broadband price increases, he suggested utilizing comparison sites to uncover cost-effective deals amid the anticipated rise in mid-contract prices.
