Mother Survives Meningitis Scare on Tenerife Vacation

Date:

A mother who contracted meningitis while on a vacation in Tenerife has revealed that she likely would have died if she had proceeded with her travel plans. Jade Bird, aged 33, was set to return home from the Spanish island last Wednesday but became severely ill at the airport due to the illness she acquired during her holiday. She was quickly taken from the airport to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with meningitis stemming from an infection in her brain.

Jade, a caregiver residing in Abergele, Wales, spent eight days in a medically induced coma followed by an additional 10 days receiving intravenous antibiotics. Fortunately, she has now recovered after returning to the UK and has been reunited with her six-year-old daughter, Skyla.

Reflecting on her experience, Jade mentioned that she has little recollection of the events but speculates that her issues may have started due to ear problems she had been facing since 2021, exacerbated by altitude changes during her Tenerife trip.

She recounted feeling unwell after a trip to Mount Teide, leading to vomiting and eventually losing consciousness. Her boyfriend recalled her distress and screaming at the airport, highlighting that it was fortunate she did not board the flight, as it may have resulted in a fatal outcome.

After spending 18 days in the hospital, Jade was discharged on March 26 and flew back home the same day. During her hospitalization, a GoFundMe page was set up by her loved ones, raising over £13,000 to cover expenses for family visits. Jade expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she received during her ordeal.

Doctors have advised Jade that her recovery may take several months due to lingering health issues, including poor hearing, weak hands, memory loss, and brain swelling. Despite facing significant medical bills, her insurance covered the costs, allowing her family to be by her side during her critical phase and aiding her in taking time off work for proper recovery.

Jade is planning to donate to Tommy’s Journey, a fundraiser for a young boy battling cancer, acknowledging that while she is unwell, her contribution can make a difference to others in need.
