After objecting to individuals hoisting a St George’s flag on a lamppost near his residence, a man disclosed that he faced offensive backlash following the incident. Adam Willett, aged 35, observed the group displaying the flag close to his home in Braintree, Essex, on April 19. He approached them, capturing the encounter on video, expressing concerns that some may have hidden agendas rather than genuine patriotism.
Subsequent to the video going viral, accumulating nearly 1.5 million views, Adam reported receiving threatening and abusive messages, including one advocating harm towards his pregnant partner. Notably, there is no evidence linking the individuals erecting the flag to the abusive content on social media.
Notably, last year witnessed a surge in artwork and flags appearing nationwide during prominent protests regarding asylum seekers. Adam noticed the men raising the St George’s flag on April 19 and politely requested them to take it down and questioned their motives.
Upon attempting to remove the flag himself with a ladder, Adam encountered resistance as some individuals began filming him. Despite his efforts to engage them in dialogue, he found their responses lacking substance. Adam highlighted that while some may have genuine concerns about immigration, their voices are overshadowed by those with hidden agendas.
Amidst the backlash, Adam disclosed facing false negative reviews targeting his business and receiving hateful messages aimed at him and his partner. He emphasized the hypocrisy of movements advocating for equality and women’s safety while engaging in such malicious behavior.
Despite the adversity, Adam acknowledged the outpouring of support he received, particularly from ex-service members. He is advocating for his local council to remove all flags from public structures for safety reasons and has sought assistance from Essex Police regarding the threatening abuse he endured.
Essex Police confirmed receiving his report and initiated investigations into the matter. Additionally, Adam initiated a petition urging the removal of illegally hung flags from public property.
