“Controversy Over Mini Zebra Crossings in Cycle Lane”

Date:

A local council is facing criticism for incorporating a small zebra crossing within a larger one as part of a controversial £17 million project to construct a cycle lane. The unique road markings, consisting of only a few white stripes, are intended to facilitate pedestrians crossing the expensive cycle lane to access a nearby bus stop.

To ensure safety, cyclists are required to stop when they see someone waiting to cross the 3-foot-wide bike path. However, detractors are concerned that the design, likened to a child’s play mat, could cause confusion and potentially lead to accidents.

These miniature crossings can be spotted along a busy road in Poole, Dorset, where the expansive cycle lane measures up to 11 feet wide, wider than the often 10-foot-wide carriageway used by motorists. This initiative is part of a larger £120 million project to introduce nearly 50 miles of new cycle lanes across south east Dorset under the ‘Transforming Travel’ program, aiming to promote cycling and scooting in residential areas of Bournemouth, Poole, Ferndown, and Wimborne.

Critics argue that the project signifies the council’s bias against motorists, claiming that the cycle paths are underutilized and represent a misuse of public funds. Concerns have been raised by various groups, with Justin Midgley from the BCP and Dorset Motorists protest group expressing worries about potential confusion among the public regarding right of way and safety issues with the bus stops located within the cycle lane.

Local residents and social media users have also voiced discontent, labeling the new crossings as wasteful spending. Some residents have compared the design to a child’s play mat and questioned the necessity of pedestrian crossings within a cycle lane. Others have suggested that the council should focus on fixing potholes instead of implementing contentious projects.

Motorists have raised safety concerns regarding the cycle lane, alleging that it is seldom used and poses risks during their journeys. The road layout modifications have created challenges for vehicles at junctions, limiting space for overtaking and causing difficulties for emergency vehicles.

Additionally, worries have been expressed about the construction quality of the cycle lane after a teenage girl sustained injuries due to loose chippings. BCP Council has defended the new zebra crossings, stating that they are specifically designed to ensure pedestrian safety and not to cater to motorists’ preferences.

According to a BCP Council spokesperson, the markings adhere to national design standards and have been implemented to enhance pedestrian access at bus stops. Similar markings have been previously installed in other locations to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety on narrow roads.
