Texas Driver Shoots Carjacker in Self-Defense

Date:

A carjacker was fatally shot in a Texas parking lot when the driver fired to protect his family inside the vehicle. Garland Police stated that the armed driver will not be charged as the shooting was deemed an act of self-defense.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded on a Sunday afternoon when the suspect caused a collision involving two vehicles. Subsequently, he abandoned a green car at a nearby gas station and tried to enter other vehicles forcefully. Lt. Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police Department described the suspect’s actions, stating, “He crashed into two vehicles, parked in a gas station, and immediately began trying to force his way into other vehicles.”

The suspect then moved across the road to another parking lot where he targeted a white car with occupants, including children. Barineau mentioned, “He actually crossed the street to the parking lot on the other side of the street.” The driver of the vehicle resisted the suspect’s attempt to gain entry, leading to a struggle as a young boy managed to escape to safety.

“The driver was defending himself and was fighting with the suspect. The car had several children and two other women,” stated Barineau. After a brief altercation, the driver retrieved his own firearm, fired more than 10 rounds from the passenger side, and struck the suspect. The shooting incident was captured on video and is part of the ongoing investigation.

Witness Taylor Standfield, a nearby resident, believed the driver acted to safeguard his passengers. Standfield expressed empathy, saying, “I have three kids. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to keep them safe. That kind of stuff is split-second.”

Authorities confirmed that none of the individuals in the targeted vehicle sustained injuries. Tatiana Starks, a manager at Garland Smoke and Vape, who witnessed the events, mentioned that the suspect seemed distressed before the incident. Starks commended the driver’s actions, highlighting the importance of protecting family members from harm.
