Dr. Louis Aronne, the study author from the Weill Cornell Medicine center in New York, highlighted the long-term benefits of daily pill treatments in managing various health issues. These weight loss drugs have the potential to address over 200 diseases associated with obesity and could be recommended by general practitioners to individuals even mildly overweight.
Currently, around 2.5 million individuals in the UK rely on weight loss injections, primarily through costly private prescriptions. The NHS plans to extend access to treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro to approximately 3.4 million people within the next twelve years. While the powerful appetite-suppressing injections can lead to significant weight loss, they often come with side effects like nausea and digestive issues, causing some users to discontinue their use.
A recent trial involving 376 patients in the US who switched to the pill form of the weight loss drug orforglipron, observed that 75% of their weight loss was maintained after a year. The pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly sponsored this study.
Dr. Aronne emphasized the importance of addressing obesity early on to prevent severe health issues, suggesting a proactive approach to treatment. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is currently reviewing an application from Eli Lilly to authorize orforglipron for sale in the UK.
