Galatasaray’s Lucas Torreira was attacked outside a cafe in the Beyoglu district, resulting in minor injuries around his left eye. The incident involved a man who was promptly apprehended by the police. Torreira has taken legal action against the assailant.
Authorities revealed that the attacker had a criminal record and was already under a restraining order during the assault. The altercation took place at a cafe within a shopping mall in the Camiikebir neighborhood. The suspect tried to escape in a taxi but was intercepted by the police.
Investigations uncovered that the perpetrator had posted threatening messages directed at Torreira in the past. Torreira, who joined Galatasaray in 2022 after leaving Arsenal, had previously won the Super Lig title four times with the Turkish club. His decision to move was driven by a desire for consistent playing time ahead of the World Cup.
Torreira’s transfer to Galatasaray came after stints at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina, following a decline in opportunities at Arsenal. Initially signed by Unai Emery in 2018, Torreira’s performances waned under Mikel Arteta’s management. The midfielder expressed his motivation to play for Uruguay and emphasized the importance of regular game time for his career progression.
