A man who was fatally shot in what authorities have labeled an ‘underworld attack’ has been identified as Alai Ahio, aged 28. Ahio, a former associate of the Sydney-based rap group OneFour, sustained his injuries during the incident at a residence in Canley Heights. The shooting resulted in multiple casualties, with two men, including Ahio and another individual aged 32, seeking medical treatment at Liverpool Hospital. Unfortunately, Ahio succumbed to his injuries after undergoing surgery. The 32-year-old remains in the hospital in serious condition with a neck injury.
Additionally, two other men, aged 23 and 22, arrived at Fairfield Hospital in serious condition shortly after the incident. They have since been transferred to different medical facilities for treatment. The 23-year-old is being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck, while the 22-year-old is receiving treatment for a shoulder injury. Subsequently, a 19-year-old man presented himself at Liverpool Hospital with arm injuries and is currently in stable condition.
Authorities suspect that two other men entered the Canley Vale residence, triggering the violent confrontation. These men are believed to have fled the scene in a white SUV. Investigation is ongoing, with police exploring potential connections to the underworld, specifically focusing on a group referred to as the “coconut cartel,” although no definitive links have been established yet. A crime scene has been established at the Canley Heights residence, and another at a Saint Johns Park address where two cars used to transport the injured men were found.
Detective Superintendent Craig Middleton emphasized that the attack appears to have been targeted, and law enforcement is taking steps to prevent further incidents in the following 48 hours. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time, with Middleton describing it as a bold and violent assault. Authorities are considering organized crime involvement but caution that it is still early in the investigation.
Fairfield City Police Area Command, with support from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, is leading the investigation. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
