UK Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave This Bank Holiday

Date:

The Met Office has issued guidance on staying cool as it predicts potentially record-breaking high temperatures for this upcoming Bank Holiday weekend in May.

According to the national weather agency, various regions are likely to experience official heatwave conditions from Saturday through Monday, with temperatures expected to reach 33C in some parts of the UK on Monday. Saturday may see highs of 30C, while Sunday could reach 32C, as stated by the Met Office.

Given the forecast, individuals in the UK will be looking for ways to stay cool both outdoors and indoors during the extended weekend. The Met Office has shared a set of recommendations for those opting to stay indoors to avoid the intense sunshine, such as closing curtains in rooms that receive direct sunlight to help keep the indoor temperature down.

Steve Kocher, the Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned that temperatures are set to rise significantly over the weekend, particularly in southern regions, with projections of 30C on Saturday and 32C on Sunday. The peak in temperatures is anticipated on Monday, with a potential record of 33C in southern England and the Midlands.

This weekend’s heatwave is likely to break the current UK temperature records for May and Spring, with the existing record standing at 32.8C. The expected duration of the hot spell is likely to meet the official criteria for a heatwave, defined as three consecutive days of temperatures surpassing the designated threshold across the country, which varies from 28C to 25C in different regions.

The Met Office anticipates that heatwave conditions will be prevalent in parts of the south-east on Sunday before extending into central and western England and parts of Wales.

Despite the expected heat, not all areas will experience scorching temperatures. Mr. Kocher noted that Northern Ireland and western Scotland might see more cloud cover and showers throughout the weekend. Additionally, due to relatively low sea surface temperatures, coastal areas are likely to experience some low cloud and sea fog.
