A woman fainted during a severe punishment in Indonesia and had to be carried away. The incident occurred in Banda Aceh, where the unnamed woman received 100 lashes for engaging in extramarital sexual relations. Both she and her partner were publicly punished for the offense, with images showing them in pain as the lashes were administered. The woman collapsed and needed assistance.
Sharia law, applicable in certain areas of the province, prohibits unmarried couples from having sexual intercourse. Violations can result in public caning for activities like gambling, drinking alcohol, and homosexual acts. For instance, child rape carries a penalty of 200 cane strokes, up to 200 months in prison, or a fine equivalent to two kilograms of gold.
Earlier this year, an unidentified woman and her partner were each lashed 140 times, with 40 lashes for alcohol consumption and 100 for extramarital sex. They were part of a group of six individuals publicly whipped for breaking Islamic law, which included a sharia police officer and his female companion caught in a private setting.
Muhammad Rizal, the head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, confirmed that there are no exceptions to the punishment, even for law enforcement personnel. In another case, two men received 76 lashes each for having sex, as decreed by a Sharia court. Although gay sex is legal under Indonesian national law, the autonomy granted to Banda Aceh allows the province to enforce Sharia law independently.
