Florida Teacher Fired for Hanging Black Doll in Classroom

Date:

A Florida teacher was dismissed from her position after a student captured video footage of her using a cord to hang a black baby doll in her classroom. The incident involved Karen Whitmire Savage, a 63-year-old art teacher at Barrington Middle School in Hillsborough County. The student, identified as Noah, filmed the teacher’s actions and reported that she took the doll from one of the students before proceeding to hang it.

Following the incident, Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Van Ayres condemned the teacher’s behavior and stated that Savage had been removed from the campus pending an investigation. By the following day, the school district announced Savage’s termination, and her conduct was reported to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practice Services.

A district spokesperson emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior and assured that immediate action was taken to address the situation appropriately. Counselors will be available to support students affected by the incident.

Noah described how initially, some students nervously laughed, but the room fell silent when the doll was hung. He recounted that after wrapping the cord around the doll’s neck, Savage dismissed concerns by stating it was a joke before removing the doll.

Noah shared the video with his family group chat, and his mother, Nina Williams, posted it on Instagram, garnering nearly 450,000 likes. Williams expressed outrage at the teacher’s actions, highlighting the trauma and hate displayed in front of children who should feel safe in a classroom environment.

After the lesson, Noah reported the incident to the student affairs office, where he was interrupted by Savage. Disturbed by the experience, Noah hoped the teacher would not be allowed to teach again.

Williams likened the act to racial violence and lynchings, expressing concern over the impact on her son. She revealed her consideration of legal action against the school district while acknowledging their swift response in removing Savage from campus.

“I do appreciate that. And I am praying that she never gets to return to another school in any county in any state,” Williams said.
