Millions Gather in Mecca for Sacred Hajj Pilgrimage

Date:

Muslims worldwide are currently congregating in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a significant religious event that draws millions of worshippers to the holy city of Mecca. This pilgrimage, a fundamental tenet of Islam, is a revered journey that many followers aspire to undertake at least once in their lives.

During the Hajj, pilgrims engage in a series of sacred rituals, such as circumambulating the Kaaba, a revered cube-shaped structure draped in black cloth at the heart of Mecca’s Grand Mosque, and assembling at Mount Arafat for prayers and contemplation. The pilgrimage occurs during Dhul Hujjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, with Eid Al-Adha typically observed on May 27 by the majority of participants.

A time-lapse video captured in Mecca showcases worshippers performing Tawaf, a mandatory act of devotion involving circling the Kaaba, essential during both Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. With pilgrims flocking to Mecca, hotels, airports, and roads are swiftly filling up, prompting advisories for worshippers to shield themselves from the scorching heat, stay hydrated, and avoid peak outdoor hours as temperatures soar to 44°C.

Eid al-Adha, celebrated by the majority of Muslims on May 27, marks the conclusion of the Hajj period and is known as the “Feast of Sacrifice.” Following the Eid prayer, adherents globally participate in Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of livestock like sheep, goats, cows, or camels, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering obedience to Allah.

In the spirit of submission exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim, pilgrims endure long walks in extreme heat between sacred sites in Mecca. This week, sweltering conditions are anticipated as Gulf countries enter the summer season, with maximum temperatures projected to range from 42°C to 44°C and lows between 26°C and 29°C.

Before embarking on the pilgrimage, worshippers prepare mentally, focusing on their intention (niyyah) for Hajj. Subsequently, they enter a state of spiritual purity known as Ihram, donning white garments symbolizing the equality of all pilgrims before Allah, regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnic background. To maintain holiness during Hajj, certain activities like sex, smoking, or body hair removal are prohibited.

Completing Hajj in Mecca is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a vital religious obligation that Muslims must fulfill if physically and financially able. By partaking in various religious rites in the birthplace of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, pilgrims fulfill this mandatory duty.
