“Woman Arrested 50 Years Later for Scalding Death”

Date:

In a dramatic turn of events, police apprehended a woman who was responsible for the tragic death of a five-year-old girl by immersing her in scalding water as a means of punishment. Janice Nix faced justice for the incident that occurred nearly 50 years ago in Thornton Heath, South London. Little Andrea Bernard passed away in the hospital five weeks after the harrowing event.

Initially deemed accidental, Andrea’s death resurfaced when her older brother came forward in 2022 with new details of the incident. Nix, 67, was visibly emotional upon being found guilty of manslaughter and the Metropolitan Police shared body-worn footage of her arrest at Heathrow Airport.

During the arrest, the officer recalled past encounters with Nix before confiscating her belongings and informing her of the reasons for her detainment. Nix, visibly shaken, was taken into custody for further questioning to prevent her escape.

The heart-wrenching moment when Andrea pleaded with her mother that the bath was too hot resurfaced during the trial. Nix’s mistreatment extended beyond Andrea, as she was also convicted of assaulting and mistreating Andrea’s older brother, Desmond Bernard.

Desmond, now 56, disclosed years of abuse at the hands of Nix, highlighting her violent and cruel behavior towards the children under her care. The court heard chilling details of Nix’s actions leading up to the tragic incident in 1978.

Nix’s arrest in 2025 upon arrival from Antigua marked a pivotal moment in the quest for justice for Andrea’s untimely death. The Crown Prosecution Service commended the bravery of Andrea’s brother for speaking up and initiating the legal proceedings that ultimately brought Nix to account for her actions.

The case shed light on a history of abuse and neglect, underscoring the importance of accountability for past injustices, even decades after the fact.
