Lawmakers Urge Probe into Farage’s Hacking Allegations

Date:

Top lawmakers are urging intelligence agencies to investigate Nigel Farage’s claims of phone hacking. There are demands to restrict his access to government networks and officials after he alleged that information about a private donation was leaked due to Kremlin-linked hackers.

The Liberal Democrats have called on the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to look into the matter, expressing concerns about a party leader potentially being compromised by a foreign power. Deputy leader Daisy Cooper emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the potential threat to democracy if a politician’s communications are breached by a hostile state.

Farage, leader of Reform UK, accused hackers of revealing a significant donation he received before the last general election. The undisclosed sum is now under investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, as rules mandate the declaration of political contributions within a specific timeframe.

The former NCSC head dismissed Farage’s hacking claims as baseless, prompting calls for evidence to support his allegations. Pressure is mounting for Farage to provide proof of the breach, especially after reports from Reform sources suggesting that his phone had been compromised.

Labour chair Anna Turley has warned of escalating the issue to law enforcement or security agencies if Farage fails to validate his claims. The lack of evidence and transparency regarding the alleged breach has raised concerns about potential vulnerabilities in national security.

In letters to NCSC officials, Lib Dem representatives have called for measures to prevent Farage from accessing sensitive information and communicating with government officials using his device. They insist on safeguarding against potential blackmail risks and unauthorized data leaks to foreign entities.

Reform UK and NCSC have been approached for comments, with Reform asserting that the matter has been reported to relevant authorities. NCSC reiterated its commitment to defending against cyber threats and supporting individuals affected by potential online attacks.
