A 23-year-old British citizen is currently detained in Tenerife after being accused of causing the death of another individual during an alleged altercation on a popular party street. The detained individual, whose identity remains undisclosed under Spanish law unless a public trial takes place, has been ordered to remain in a local prison as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident.
The victim, a 37-year-old British national whose name has not been disclosed, tragically passed away in the early hours of Thursday following the reported confrontation at Las Veronicas, a well-known nightlife area situated in Playa de las Americas in the southern region of the island.
The 23-year-old suspect has appeared before a judge in a closed-door court hearing, which is standard practice in Spain where only trials are open to the public. As of now, the individual has not faced formal charges, which is customary in Spain where charges are typically filed closer to the trial date following an extensive judicial inquiry by a magistrate.
Consequently, the suspect is under official investigation as part of an ongoing legal inquiry into the alleged homicide. A court official stated that the detainee was presented before the Duty Court of the Investigating Division of the Court of First Instance of Arona, where a judge ordered the individual’s provisional detention without bail while the investigation into the homicide offense continues.
A confidentiality order has been imposed on the case by the investigating judge, a common measure in Spain to safeguard judicial investigations, particularly in the early stages, which restricts the disclosure of information by officials. Authorities on the island have confirmed the nationalities of both the detained individual and the deceased holidaymaker.
