A tragic incident occurred in northern Spain as a British woman lost her life in a mountain fall while hiking with her partner. The 42-year-old woman fell over 500 meters from the Balaitus Peak in the Pyrenees near the Spanish-French border. The fatal accident took place on the Great Diagonal, a well-known climbing route leading to the peak’s elevation of 3,144 meters.
The woman, a British national residing in Finland, was identified as the deceased. Her partner, a 53-year-old man also living in Finland, was unharmed during the incident. Police authorities confirmed her nationality and noted that the incident occurred on Saturday evening.
An investigation is ongoing as authorities treat the woman’s death as a tragic accident resulting from a fall. Mountain search and rescue specialists from the Civil Guard unit were deployed, and a helicopter was used to transport the woman’s body to a nearby heliport for further procedures.
The victim’s body was later transferred to Zaragoza’s Forensic Medicine Institute for a post-mortem examination. According to a source, the weather conditions were favorable at the time of the incident, although the woman was believed to have slipped on a snow-covered area while descending the mountain.
The Balaitus Peak, situated on the Spain-France border, serves as a significant landmark in the region, with multiple ridges and breathtaking views. This unfortunate event follows a similar incident last month where a 61-year-old British hiker was found deceased after going missing in adverse weather conditions in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain.
