A British soldier, identified as Lance Corporal James Freeman from the Royal Anglian Regiment, tragically lost his life in a training incident in Iraq. The fatal accident occurred at an air base in Erbil, located in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq where the US military has a presence.
In addition to L/Cpl Freeman, an American soldier also perished during the same training accident, as confirmed by a tweet from the US Army. The Ministry of Defence announced the unfortunate incident, expressing deep regret over the loss of the British service member.
Described as a dedicated and experienced soldier, Freeman was engaged in routine training activity as part of Operation Shader, the UK’s campaign against the Islamic State. His military career included deployments to various regions such as South Sudan, Cyprus, Iraq, the Falklands, Jordan, Romania, and Kenya.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted Freeman’s commitment to his family, portraying him as a devoted family man who always prioritized his loved ones. Defence Secretary John Healey expressed profound sadness at the news of Freeman’s passing and extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
L/Cpl Freeman’s Platoon Commander, Lieutenant Samuel Frost, praised him as an impressive soldier and a valuable team member who will be deeply missed and remembered. Corporal William Thorpe, Freeman’s close friend, shared heartfelt words about their bond and the impact Freeman had on his life.
The American soldier’s identity involved in the training exercise remains undisclosed at this time.
