“8.2 Magnitude Earthquake Halts Alabel Government Operations”

Date:

Government operations in Alabel have been halted following a significant earthquake that struck the Philippines earlier today. Alabel, known as the Municipality of Alabel, serves as the capital of Sarangani province in the Philippines.

The earthquake, with an initial magnitude of 8.2, occurred near Davao City around 7:40am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre later revised the magnitude to 7.8. Concerns about a possible tsunami prompted alerts for countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and the west coast of the United States.

Although New Zealand and Australia initially expressed fears of a tsunami, they have since confirmed that the threat has subsided. The Local Government Unit of Alabel, under Mayor Lilibeth “Ybing” J. Salarda, MPA, has suspended all classes and government activities until further notice to ensure public safety. Residents are advised to stay in open areas away from buildings and stay tuned to official channels for updates.

For emergency assistance in Alabel, residents can contact the Alabel Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) at 0970-025-7156. President Bongbong Marcos of the Philippines is yet to make a statement regarding the earthquake incident.
