“21-Year-Old Driver Sentenced for Fatal Collision”

Date:

A 21-year-old driver, Rosie Hanson, received a suspended 16-month prison sentence for causing the death of Ryan Phillips by driving carelessly. The incident occurred on Marine Parade in Sheerness, Kent, where Hanson’s speeding VW Golf struck Phillips and his girlfriend, Sophie Rowe, as they walked to celebrate his recent IT apprenticeship. Hanson, delivering a pizza at the time, claimed to have swerved to avoid hitting a cat.

Prosecutors revealed that Hanson was driving well over the speed limit, between 54 to 68mph, before the accident. The court noted that her erratic driving at high speed led to the fatal collision. Despite Hanson’s young age and lack of criminal intent, the judge emphasized the severity of her actions, which resulted in the tragic loss of life.

In statements read in court, Rowe described Phillips as a loving and ambitious individual, looking forward to a new job in IT. Phillips’ mother, Catherine, expressed profound grief over the sudden loss of her son, highlighting the lasting impact on their family. She also criticized the handling of the case, questioning why Hanson was not immediately arrested at the scene.

Hanson, expressing remorse in a letter to the court, apologized to Phillips’ family and acknowledged the gravity of her actions. She was sentenced to unpaid work, a driving ban, and required to pass an extended driving test. The judge acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and rehabilitation for the young offender.
