A renowned British school with a history spanning 742 years is set to permanently close its doors, leading to emotional distress among students. Ruthin school, located in North Wales and offering both boarding and day programs, will cease operations at the end of the current term.
The decision was announced by Galaxy Global Education Group, a Chinese-owned entity that acquired the school in early 2023. Additionally, Durham High School, also owned by the group, will undergo closure simultaneously.
Over 100 employees are facing job cuts, and approximately 240 students’ parents are now urgently seeking alternative educational options, as reported by North Wales Live.
Established in 1284, Ruthin School stands as one of the oldest educational institutions in the UK. Following its closure at the end of the summer term, the school will enter financial administration.
Despite its prestigious history and academic performance, Ruthin School has unfortunately failed to sustain its operations, according to a report by North Wales Live.
Recently recognized as the top independent school in North Wales by The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 and featured among the leading boarding schools in the UK by the Independent Schools Council, Ruthin School’s closure is described by Galaxy Global as “profoundly sorry” and “incredibly sad” for all those connected to the institution.
A spokesperson expressed regret, stating, “Despite exhaustive efforts to secure the school’s future, a sustainable financial path forward could not be established.”
A mother from Ruthin School shared her surprise, mentioning, “It’s shocking news for parents like me. We were informed today at 4 pm, and my 12-year-old has been in tears all evening.”
Another parent from Mold expressed distress, saying, “This is devastating. We are unsure how to proceed. With one child entering year 11 and another year 7, we are all deeply shocked and saddened.”
A parent of a Durham High student disclosed, “The girls were instructed to clear out their lockers this afternoon.”
Families who paid monthly fees yesterday morning were caught off guard by the closure announcement shortly thereafter.
“After a remarkable 742-year journey, the school bids farewell today, a poignant moment for all. Best wishes to those facing similar circumstances,” expressed a somber sentiment.
