Law enforcement officials have apprehended a male suspect in connection with the tragic death of former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe. Authorities have indicated that they do not believe the incident was politically motivated.
The 78-year-old was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, situated in the village of Dartmoor, Devon, early on Thursday. Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP who later transitioned to being a Brexit Party MEP and later a spokesperson for Reform UK, resided alone at the property. Reports suggest she was found by a caretaker, with visible injuries including at least one severe head wound.
While the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, authorities have disclosed that a 26-year-old white male, a British national, has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and is currently in police custody. The arrest took place in Newton Abbot, approximately 10 miles away from the residence of the late Strictly Come Dancing personality.
During a press briefing, Devon and Cornwall Police’s Assistant Chief Constable, Matt Longman, stated that there is no evidence to suggest the crime was politically driven and clarified that the incident is not linked to terrorism.
Details regarding potential theft during the incident, whether the assailant forcibly entered the residence, or the use of any weapon have not been disclosed to the public.
Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson emphasized the rapid progress of the investigation, stating, “This is a tragic event, and our condolences go out to Ann Widdecombe’s loved ones during this challenging period.
“Our inquiry into the murder is still in its early stages but is progressing swiftly. We are utilizing all available resources to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the individual responsible, who we believe to be a white male.”
Shortly after the briefing, authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect. Chief Constable Longman reiterated that the investigation is at a preliminary phase but is advancing rapidly.
He further commented, “We are committing all necessary resources to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident. I urge anyone with information, regardless of its perceived significance, to come forward and assist us in our inquiries.”
Authorities were alerted to the residence in Haytor Vale, a village within Dartmoor National Park, around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday by emergency medical services. Ms. Widdecombe, who lived independently, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her family has been notified and is receiving support from specialized personnel.
Retiring from politics in 2001, the former MP relocated to her Devon residence, known as Widdecombe’s Rest, in 2008. When asked in an interview in 2013 about potential security concerns due to her easily accessible property, she expressed a sense of contentment and lack of fear.
