In the wake of five deaths in lakes and reservoirs over a span of five days, parents are being urged to engage in crucial conversations with their children regarding water safety. The distressing death toll, which has surpassed 30 in recent months, has sparked renewed calls for action from bereaved families and advocates, including the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign.
Simon Haycock, who leads the Mirror’s campaign supported by the RNLI and other organizations, expressed concerns about the escalating death toll. Many recent fatalities occurred in reservoirs, such as the tragic incident in Rotherham that claimed the life of his 16-year-old son, Sam.
The recent surge in incidents, particularly in the north-west of England, as people flock to the seaside during the ongoing heatwave, has raised alarms among authorities. Police in Greater Manchester and Derbyshire recently recovered the bodies of two 18-year-olds in separate water-related incidents amid the scorching 35C heatwave.
These incidents follow a series of tragic events, including the death of a 16-year-old in Lincoln and 15-year-old Declan Sawyer in previous heatwaves. The risks associated with reservoirs were highlighted by Matt Black of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, who emphasized the lack of escape in such scenarios.
Further tragedies unfolded with the loss of Rowan Booth, 21, in a paddleboarding accident at Llyn Geirionydd in North Wales. His friends are now supporting The Mirror’s water safety campaign.
