Keir Starmer is set to step down as Prime Minister next week following a six-year tenure leading the Labour party.
During his final Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, Mr. Starmer highlighted his proudest accomplishments while in office, including advancements in the UK economy, enhancements to the NHS, and efforts to combat child poverty through investments.
He informed ministers that his administration had significantly improved the country’s international reputation by resetting relationships with the European Union, actively participating in initiatives regarding Ukraine, and planning for a mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
As MPs from various parties paid tribute to the outgoing PM, Mr. Starmer promised to offer his full support to Andy Burnham privately, respecting the need to be asked for advice publicly.
At the same meeting, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy commended the PM’s contributions, emphasizing his dedication to the people of the country, exceptional work ethic, and unwavering resilience. Lammy praised Mr. Starmer for his enduring commitment to serving the public.
The emotional final Prime Minister’s Questions session saw Mr. Starmer receive a standing ovation from attendees, with many moved to tears, while the majority of the Commons applauded warmly, although the Conservative members remained seated without clapping.
