Lionel Messi and Spain’s rising star, Lamine Yamal, are set to face off in the World Cup final, marking a significant encounter 19 years after their initial meeting. Back in 2007, Yamal’s parents, Mounir Nasraoui and Sheila Ebana, won a contest that granted them a chance to meet a Barcelona player when their son was just five months old. The player they met happened to be Messi, who was then a 20-year-old emerging talent for both Barcelona and Argentina, known for defeating England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final.
The encounter was captured in photographs by Joan Monfort and resurfaced when Yamal contributed to Spain’s victory in Euro 2024. The images depict a young Messi tenderly holding and caring for a baby boy who would later follow in his footballing footsteps.
Describing the meeting as a stroke of destiny, Monfort expressed awe at the unexpected connection between the two. The photoshoot took place in the away dressing room at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, courtesy of a competition win by Yamal’s family.
Yamal, whose full name is Lamine Yamal Naraoui Ebana, honors two individuals who supported his family during his birth by wearing their names on his shirts. Growing up in Rocafonda, a neighborhood near Barcelona, he has paid tribute to his roots by celebrating goals with a gesture representing Rocafonda’s postcode.
