“Which? Rates Marks & Spencer and Next Top in School Uniforms”

Date:

Marks & Spencer and Next have been rated as top performers in the school uniform category, excelling in various aspects according to research conducted by consumer group Which?. Both retail giants achieved an impressive score of 81%, earning the maximum five-star ratings for durability, comfort, practicality, overall appearance, and value for money.

As the school year comes to an end and parents gear up for the next academic term, the cost of school uniforms becomes a significant consideration for many families, particularly amidst the current financial pressures. Marks & Spencer and Next were closely followed by Sainsbury’s Tu brand at 78%, John Lewis at 77%, and Asda’s George at 76% in the Which? rankings.

Customers praised Marks & Spencer for the longevity of their items, perfect sizing, and stain-resistant qualities. Similarly, Next received positive feedback for its durability and resistance to wear and tear throughout the school year.

Next’s exceptional performance led to it being recognized as the inaugural recipient of the Which? Best School Uniform Provider endorsement. While Marks & Spencer also stood out, concerns were raised by Which? regarding its return policy terms and conditions.

On the other end of the spectrum, Poundland’s Pepco brand received the lowest customer score at 66%. Although Marks & Spencer and Next were hailed for their value for money, it’s important to note that this doesn’t solely reflect pricing differences.

Which? highlighted the challenge of comparing prices across school uniform providers due to variations in options and pack sizes. For instance, a two-pack of polo shirts for a six to seven-year-old costs £6.50 at Marks & Spencer, £6 at Next, £7 at John Lewis, £3 at Sainsbury’s and Tesco, and only £1.75 at Aldi.

Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, emphasized that Next and Marks & Spencer offer excellent value for money, particularly in terms of durability. For budget-conscious shoppers, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Tesco are recommended choices, providing a good balance of fit, appearance, and cost-effectiveness.

The introduction of new regulations aims to facilitate easier price comparison for parents, encouraging them to seek cost-effective options. Aldi was identified as offering the most affordable two-pack of school polo shirts, demonstrating the potential savings families can achieve by exploring different retailers.
