“Gaza Fans Cheer for Spain Amidst World Cup Tragedy”

Date:

An approximate 1.5 billion individuals watched the World Cup final, with a remarkable display of dedication from hundreds of fans gathered in Gaza amidst the ruins of bombed-out buildings. They stood resilient in support of Spain’s victory over Argentina, cheering for the Spanish team due to Spain’s historical support for Gaza during conflicts with Israel.

The giant screens set up during the tournament provided a temporary escape from daily struggles for Gaza residents. Numan Abdullah, a local who joined the viewing, expressed solidarity with Spain for its longstanding support of the Palestinian people.

The gathering not only symbolized peace but also conveyed support for nations backing Palestinians. Tragically, Mohammed al-Wahidi, an aid worker instrumental in organizing the screenings, lost his life in an Israeli airstrike. Al-Wahidi, once an English teacher turned humanitarian official, dedicated himself to relief efforts in Gaza.

Al-Wahidi’s commitment to fieldwork in aiding the community made him a familiar figure in local shelters. Unfortunately, his death adds to the toll of aid workers lost during the conflict, with at least 593 recorded casualties by the UN since the war’s onset.

Aid workers strategically arranged World Cup screenings to uplift morale in the camps, especially for the youth. Despite tensions, the matches provided a source of entertainment, including the notable match where Egypt was defeated by Argentina.

The Israeli military’s response to a significant Hamas-led attack in October 2023 resulted in casualties and hostages. Gaza has witnessed substantial loss of life in subsequent Israeli attacks, with over 73,000 reported fatalities according to Gaza’s health ministry, figures corroborated by the UN.
