“Retirees on State Pension Exempt from Income Tax”

Date:

Thousands of retirees relying solely on the state pension will be exempt from paying income tax, as confirmed by the new Government. The full state pension currently stands at £12,547.60 annually, just below the £12,570 personal allowance threshold.

The state pension is subject to annual increases through the triple lock mechanism, ensuring adjustments every April based on the highest value among inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. It is projected that the state pension will surpass the personal allowance for the first time in April 2027.

The Treasury has reassured that individuals receiving only the state pension will not be subject to income tax. This commitment extends through the current Parliament term.

Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves had previously stated that individuals solely reliant on the basic or new state pension would not face tax obligations starting April 2027. It was estimated that around 820,000 pensioners would potentially become liable to pay taxes on their state pension by 2027/28, except for those with multiple income sources.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces calls to raise the personal allowance, which has been frozen since 2021 and is slated to remain unchanged until at least 2031. The freeze has led to more individuals being pushed into tax payment brackets as their income levels increase.

The current income tax rates stand at 20% beyond the personal allowance, 40% for earnings exceeding £50,270, and 45% for incomes surpassing £125,140. The government is considering potential adjustments in the upcoming Budget, although challenges in the economic climate are acknowledged.
