In a past era, Donald Trump, while holding office, publicly belittled Volodymyr Zelensky instead of engaging with him as an equal. Trump’s behavior during a meeting where Zelensky sought assistance for Ukraine’s struggles was characterized by televised humiliation and condescension, with Trump asserting that Zelensky had no leverage and dismissing his position. Trump’s associates also joined in, harshly criticizing Zelensky, whose country was under attack by Vladimir Putin’s forces, in what appeared more like a scene from a mob-run establishment than a diplomatic setting.
The encounter was marked by aggression, callousness, and immense embarrassment. Trump seemed to revel in the confrontation, surrounded by supporters who understood that cruelty was the key to gaining his favor.
Fast forward to the present, as Zelensky returns to Washington for Lindsey Graham’s funeral, accompanied by Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump’s previous boasts have not aged well. The man he once belittled, claiming he held no cards, now arrives armed with significant leverage. Meanwhile, Trump has squandered America’s position through arrogance, ineptitude, and a misguided belief that flattering dictators could win their favor.
Despite Trump’s pledge to swiftly end Russia’s aggression, the promise quickly evaporated, leaving Putin’s attacks unabated, Russian forces advancing, and Ukrainian civilians mourning their losses.
Trump’s subsequent actions included pressuring the invaded country while making excuses for the invader. His attacks on Zelensky were harsher than those directed at Putin, demanding concessions from Kyiv while asking little of Moscow. Trump even spoke of Putin with admiration, indicating a willingness to align with authoritarian leaders.
However, Putin responded with disdain. Trump’s negotiation skills failed to bring peace or deterrence, only emboldening Putin to believe he could manipulate the American president through flattery and delay. The supposed master dealmaker fell victim to manipulation.
Even staunch supporters who previously echoed pro-Kremlin sentiments now acknowledge feeling deceived. Their expectations of a swift resolution to the conflict shattered, revealing the complexity of ending wars, which cannot be achieved through mere rhetoric or social media bravado.
While Trump’s focus was on theatrics, Ukraine was making significant strides in warfare technology. Forced to innovate against a superior enemy, Ukraine emerged as a leader in drone warfare, developing cost-effective weapons capable of neutralizing tanks, penetrating enemy territory, and challenging once-invincible warships. Military strategists worldwide are taking note, recognizing Ukraine’s advancements as valuable expertise that America now seeks.
In contrast, Trump’s military endeavors in Iran have encountered challenges, with his reliance on overwhelming force clashing with the realities of modern warfare, where adaptability and drone technology play crucial roles. The very technology Trump dismissed as insignificant has become essential for his military strategies, underscoring the irony of Zelensky’s return.
Trump’s initial intent to showcase dominance over Zelensky backfired, revealing the darker aspects of his presidency. Instead of a submissive leader, the world witnessed an ally facing unwarranted hostility, a victim being blamed for his plight, and the Oval Office being degraded into a stage for bullying by a leader who mistakes cruelty for strength.
Zelensky and Ukraine stood firm, not succumbing to pressure, while the cards Trump once mocked have only strengthened over time.
Although Ukraine continues to endure hardships, Western support remains crucial. However, the relationship is no longer one-sided. Ukraine now possesses valuable knowledge, experience, and technology sought after by Washington, transforming years of resilience into military proficiency, while Trump’s leadership has left American power in disarray.
In a Washington shaped by conflict and political setbacks, Trump, despite his position and influence, finds himself in a weakened state. The bully who once sought to humiliate Zelensky now relies on Ukraine’s offerings. The president who pledged swift action in Iran now faces mounting financial costs and economic challenges, reflecting the consequences of his failed promises and hubris.
As Zelensky returns with dignity, battlefield credibility, and essential technology that America requires, Trump remains surrounded by sycophants, unfulfilled pledges, and the wreckage of his own arrogance.
This time, the true holder of power is clear for all to see.
