According to Politico, Al-Khelaifi was seen as a possible replacement for Gianni Infantino as FIFA head, after criticism following this summer’s World Cup in North America and controversies surrounding the sale of commercial rights.
However, a source close to Al-Khelaifi confirmed to RMC Sport that he has no interest in pursuing the FIFA presidency, emphasizing his commitment to supporting global and European football institutions. This decision is in contrast to his position as chairman of European Football Clubs, who oppose FIFA’s commercial stake sales.
Additionally, sources close to Al-Khelaifi, also the head of BeIN Media Group, have refuted rumors of his candidacy, stating that his current priorities lie elsewhere.
Gianni Infantino is expected to have strong backing from member associations in South America, Asia, and Africa in the upcoming election, posing a challenge for any potential contenders.
Despite this, UEFA continues to challenge FIFA in search of new leadership for the election. The European governing body expressed opposition to FIFA’s plans, indicating growing discontent within the football community.
