Amanda Knox is preparing to showcase her comedic talents at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, where she will humorously recount her experience of being wrongly imprisoned for the murder of Meredith Kercher.
The tragic incident involving British student Meredith occurred in Perugia, Italy, in 2007. Amanda Knox, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, faced accusations of murder and sexual assault in 2009. Despite their protestations of innocence, they were eventually exonerated by Italy’s highest court in 2015 after a prolonged legal battle.
Now, more than ten years later, Amanda Knox is ready to take the stage and share her personal journey. The 39-year-old, now happily married with two children and residing in rural Washington, had initially intended to focus her show on motherhood. However, her comedian friends encouraged her to address the controversial events that shaped her life.
Titled “Cartwheel,” Knox’s comedy act references a false story that claimed she performed cartwheels in a police station following her friend’s tragic death. In an interview with The Telegraph, Knox expressed her belief that no topic should be off-limits in comedy, yet she made it clear that she would not joke about Kercher’s murder out of respect.
While acknowledging concerns from loved ones about potential backlash, Knox humorously quipped about her impeccable public image. On the other hand, Francesco Maresca, the lawyer representing Kercher’s family, deemed the comedy show offensive and deplorable.
Despite the familial disapproval, Knox expressed a desire to communicate with Kercher’s relatives, emphasizing her longing for closure and understanding. She stressed that her story, which includes a significant chapter involving Meredith, deserves to be told and honored.
Knox believes that her late roommate would appreciate the show for its authentic portrayal of young womanhood and humor. Having previously shared her narrative through various mediums like documentaries, a TV drama co-produced with Monica Lewinsky, and books, Knox continues to assert her right to share her perspective. Rudy Hermann Guede, the individual convicted of Kercher’s murder in 2008, was released from prison in 2021 after serving a 16-year sentence.
