All of Italy’s major urban centers are poised to enter the highest level of heat alert on Thursday, with the country bracing for its fourth scorching heatwave of the summer, potentially reaching 39 degrees Celsius.
This marks the first instance this year where every city under Italy’s Health Ministry heat monitoring system is under the maximum red warning.
Authorities have confirmed that 25 cities were already on red alert on Wednesday, with an additional two cities expected to join the list on Thursday.
In Italy, a red alert is activated when extended periods of extreme heat are forecasted to pose health risks to the general population, increasing the likelihood of heat-related emergencies for everyone, not just vulnerable groups. Recent days have seen temperatures soaring close to 40 degrees Celsius in some regions, leading authorities to implement public health guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with the scorching weather.
Residents have been advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 6 pm, stay indoors when possible, and consume at least 1.5 liters of water daily.
Officials have also recommended refraining from consuming carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol, and heavy meals, wearing light clothing, and ensuring children and pets are not left in parked cars.
Meteorologists predict that the intense heat is unlikely to relent for at least another week. The ongoing heatwave has been linked to four recent fatalities, including a 19-year-old agricultural worker and a 40-year-old carpenter in Lombardy, as well as a security guard in Bologna suspected to have succumbed to a heat-related ailment.
The prolonged period of scorching temperatures has exacerbated drought conditions in the Po Valley, with over 100 towns in Piedmont and Lombardy facing water shortages, some relying on tanker deliveries for water supply.
Farmers have reported reduced crop yields, accelerated grape ripening, and a 10% decline in milk production as dairy cows consume less feed in the sweltering heat.
In Rome, authorities are providing free access to air-conditioned cinemas and cultural venues, extending evening hours at iconic sites like the Colosseum and Pantheon.
Forecasters have cautioned that relief from the high temperatures is unlikely before the following week.
Lorenzo Giovannini, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Trento, highlighted that the current heatwaves surpass average intensity and duration, attributing the phenomenon to the climate crisis intensifying the heatwaves.
Scientists have linked the increasing frequency and severity of heatwaves to human-induced climate change. Reports from the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the World Meteorological Organization indicate that Europe has warmed at a rate more than double the global average since the 1980s.
