A written apology from Robert Bush, a disgraced funeral director, has triggered outrage among the families of his victims. Bush, who was sentenced to 20 years in jail by Hull Crown Court, was found guilty of mishandling burials and cremations, giving grieving families incorrect ashes, and even an animal’s ashes in one case. Despite offering an apology to those affected by his actions, many are expressing anger towards his gesture.
Following a police raid on Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull in March 2024, approximately 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes were discovered. Jasmine Beverley, whose son’s remains were found at the funeral home nearly two years after his stillbirth, described the letter as “cold and condescending.” She expressed disbelief along with other families present when the letter was read after Bush’s sentencing.
Critics pointed out that Bush’s apology seemed insincere and lacking genuine remorse. Jasmine highlighted the letter’s lack of acknowledgment of his actions, emphasizing the lasting emotional impact on the affected families. She also criticized the letter’s content, noting errors and an absence of a genuine apology.
In his letter to the victims, Bush expressed regret for the distress caused by his actions, acknowledging the pain and uncertainty experienced by the families. He accepted responsibility for his failures, admitting that he should have acted differently and sooner. Prosecutors revealed that Bush admitted to 67 offenses, including preventing lawful burials and theft from charities, running a disorganized operation that led to extreme emotional distress for the families involved.
Jasmine recounted the harrowing experience of finding her stillborn son’s remains in a paper bag at the funeral parlour, leaving a lasting trauma. She condemned the letter, expressing her ongoing anger and distress over the mishandling of her son’s funeral arrangements. Karen Dry, who supported some of the affected families, criticized the lack of genuine remorse in Bush’s apology, labeling it as self-serving and insensitive.
The families impacted by Bush’s actions continue to seek justice and closure, with Jasmine calling for a public inquiry. The apology letter, despite its formal language, fell short of addressing the deep emotional scars left on the families affected by Bush’s misconduct.
