Police responded to a chaotic scene at Leinbach Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, following a prearranged altercation that turned deadly with a mass shooting resulting in two fatalities. The incident, which occurred around 9:52 am local time, involved several young individuals engaged in a brawl, leaving multiple individuals injured besides the two deceased victims.
Although the exact number of casualties has not been confirmed by the Winston-Salem police, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI) stated that “several people” had been shot during the incident. The NC SBI alerted the public through a Facebook post, clarifying that the shooting did not take place at Jefferson Middle School but at Leinbach Park and advised people to steer clear of the area temporarily.
Authorities have requested the public to refrain from operating personal drones in the vicinity as it may disrupt ongoing emergency operations. Police are employing drones to locate individuals involved in the altercation. While some victims and suspects have been identified and apprehended, efforts are ongoing to ensure accountability for all individuals involved, particularly noting that some are juveniles.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a planned confrontation among young individuals at the park escalated, resulting in a shootout involving multiple individuals. The suspects involved in the shooting are still at large, and law enforcement officials are actively investigating the incident near Sally Kirk Rd, close to Leinbach Park. Additionally, a significant police presence remains in the area as the investigation continues.
